I really meant to do this sooner, but what can I say… I just haven’t! We had a great time on our vacation to northern VA/Washington DC area. It was nice to be in the area again and visit some favorite spots there. Here is a recap of the trip.
Thursday May 18
- Flew out to Dulles
- Spent the afternoon driving around Reston, Herndon and Ashburn. Looked at places we use to live and shop and eat. It was nice but nothing remarkable. We also went to Leesburg and looked around at a few of the shops. Someday I would like to do the Ghost Tour there.
Friday May 19
- By far my favorite day of vacation!
- Went into DC on the metro and spent all day going to various Smithsonian museums, walking around the national, mall and National Gallery of Art. Brian got a great birthday present for me at the Gallery of Art, the afore mentioned beautiful reproduction of Lord Fredric Leighton’s Flaming June. We just received it via FedEx this weekend, have to decide where to hang it. (can you believe Timmay!! has referred to this painting as some fairy chic? lol)
- After we got tired of walking so much we hoped back on the metro to Pentagon City mall. As you all know, I love shopping, so I had a great time here as well.
Saturday May 20
- Saw The DaVinci Code movie. I was rather disappointed. I enjoyed the book, it was entertaining and I even re-read it recently so I could remember all the details for when the movie came out. While I understand movies can’t be exactly like the book, I think to much was changed. I don’t think the movie accurately captured the characters. Especially Silas. Silas has a pure heart and good intentions, he was just dealt a bad hand in life which he did overcome – but he was portrayed as scary and evil.
- We then spent the afternoon hanging out with Carlos and his family celebrating his graduation, the event that inspired our trip out east. There was tons of fabulous home cooked food. I had a great time visiting with his family and friends hanging out in his charming McClean condo.
Sunday May 21
- This was a fairly slow day but enjoyable non the less. We moved to a hotel in Alexandria. I love Alexandria because it is right along the river.
- Went to the Smithsonian National Zoo. It was neat to see the much publicized pandas, but the rest of the zoo was just ok.
- After the zoo, rode the metro down to China Town. China town was so small! We were there for a very short amount of time.
- This evening we met Carlos and John for dinner at a Thai restaurant in Alexandria. It was a really enjoyable dinner. Great company and food.
Monday May 22
- Got all packed up and ready to head home.
- Got in a bit more shopping at Tysons Corner mall.
- Went to the Smithsonian Air & Space Annex in Dulles. This place is amazing! There are so many different air crafts and space crafts on display. They are the real life crafts, no fake replicas here. We saw a really awesome iMax movie about the Space Station. There were several books in the gift shop that are now going on my reading list. I would highly recommend a visit here to anyone who can make it.
- In the late afternoon we headed back to the airport and made it safely back home where the first we did was make a stop at the Frontier so I could get some chile!
Fairy chic, flaming June, sleeping lady in an orange dress, its all the same, right? Just like a Feresa is the same thing as a fish, right???
…or am I wrong?
Timmay!!
was great to see you guys out here, will see you next time we’re in abq!
